AOL/ICQ has made server-side changes that is affecting a broad range of ICQ clients. The result is some users are complaining that all their contacts appear offline, or are receiving messages from invisible people. This is because the change forces your contacts to be on the server-side contact list before they will show up as online. This change eliminates the ability to add contacts only to a locally stored contact list, which is often preferred as it removes the necessity of authorization.
This change affects the following popular clients:
- Miranda 0.3
- Trillian 0.74, Trillian Pro 1.0
- ICQ2000
Most shockingly, this now means the death of the ICQ2000 series of clients, since they stored the contact list locally. ICQ2001 and up stores the contact list on the ICQ server.
The solution for Miranda is to ask the Miranda client to upload the local contact list to the server. This can be accomplished without authorizing any contacts. See this screenshot for instructions.
Trillian doesn't have any official solution yet for their free client. A major update to the Trillian free client is expected within a month, or Trillian may release a patch. The issue is being discussed in the Trillian forums, see link below. Trillian Pro 2.0x is not affected as it stores its ICQ contact list on the ICQ server.

As a continuing effort on the part of AOL/ICQ to gather opinions from its user base, there is an indepth survey available on the icq.com website.
There are 5 categories of surveys. They are:
- The ICQ Contact List
- ICQ Pro. Vs. ICQ 4 Lite Edition
- Xtraz on ICQ
- Avoiding Spam
- Why Choose ICQ?
- ICQ Mobile
- Online Shopping Habits
- ICQ and Gaming
Each category contains questions such as "What's the main reason you chose to use the ICQ client?" with a list of possible responses. I was rather disappointed with one category, the Online Shopping Habits category, asking me "How many online purchases have you made this year?" -- what does that have to do with improving the ICQ client?
Of course each category is optionally answered, and your ICQ login is required to the site.
Personally, if AOL/ICQ really wanted to improve the ICQ client, I would recommend to them the following two Web sites to check out:
http://www.trillian.cc http://www.miranda-im.org
For some reason only two guys, in the case of Trillian, were able to create a better IM user experience than the entire team at AOL/ICQ, and even get users (such as myself) to PAY for it!! Lessons to be learned, I think.
